About Dr. Arffa

Dr. Matthew Arffa is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon who specializes in surgical and cosmetic dermatology.

After obtaining his undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Oberlin College, he earned his master’s and medical degree (cum laude) from Loyola University in Chicago. While at Loyola, Dr. Arffa received multiple awards including the STAR research grant, Magis Star for outstanding service, and induction into the Surgical Honors Society. After completing his internship at Loyola Medicine MacNeal Hospital, he completed his dermatology residency at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. During his dermatology residency, Dr. Arffa received extensive training in the medical and surgical management of skin disorders in a variety of cosmetic and functional settings, in patients of all ages. Dr. Arffa was also honored to serve as chief resident and as resident director for the program’s cosmetic dermatology academic curriculum. At his graduation, Dr. Arffa was presented with the prestigious “golden scalpel” award due to his impressive number of cosmetic and surgical procedures performed during residency.

Following residency, Dr. Arffa spent 2 years in Santa Monica, California, completing research and an ACGME/ACMS accredited Mohs and Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship with the renown Dr. Richard Bennett. During this fellowship, he not only performed a high volume of complex Mohs procedures and reconstructions, but he also spent considerable time beyond his normal training to learn from world experts in cutaneous oncology and plastic surgery.

Dr. Arffa has published several peer-reviewed journal articles. He has presented his work at local, national, and international conferences and has earned numerous accolades for his work, including awards at the Chicago Dermatological Society, Texas Dermatological Society, and at Loyola University. He has also served as a commentary writer for the Dialogues in Dermatology and as a resident representative on the American Academy of Dermatology’s Melanoma/Skin Cancer Community Program Committee. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American College of Mohs Surgeons. All of these research activities have allowed Dr. Arffa to be knowledgeable of the newest and most advanced techniques to care for your skin.

Dr. Arffa is also committed to volunteering and giving back to his community. As a pre-med student, he volunteered at the Old Irving Park Community Center in Chicago. Since a medical student, he has been involved in the American Academy of Dermatology’s SPOT skin cancer screening and other similar events. He also enjoys giving back through mentorship and has been involved in Loyola University’s alumni network. While in California, Dr. Arffa was also volunteer faculty at the University of Southern California/Los Angeles General Medical Center where he trained residents and treated patients.

Dr. Arffa is thrilled to return to the Austin area and to work for Austin Skin. He strives to provide effective and empathic care based on cutting-edge research. When Dr. Arffa is not working, you can find him preparing for his next triathlon, attending concerts with his wife (a classically trained pianist), or hanging out with his dog, Leonard, at a local park.
